In 1965 Nashville, Kris Kristofferson worked as a janitor at Columbia Studios, mopping floors at 3 a.m. Though he was a Rhodes Scholar, a helicopter pilot, and had a promising position at West Point waiting, he gave it all up to follow his dream of songwriting. His mother wept, asking, “You’re a janitor now?” For years, his music went unnoticed—until Johnny Cash discovered a crumpled lyric sheet in the trash. The song was “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.” Cash read it, cried, and asked, “Who wrote this?”—the janitor had. Later, Janis Joplin turned his song “Me and Bobby McGee” into a timeless hit.
