Damon Wayans: A Comedy Icon’s Journey
Damon Kyle Wayans Sr., born on September 4, 1960, in Harlem, New York, rose from humble beginnings to become a comedy legend as part of the renowned Wayans family. Kicking off his career with stand-up in 1982, he gained early notice with a cameo in Beverly Hills Cop (1984) and a brief stint on Saturday Night Live before co-creating and starring in the groundbreaking sketch comedy series In Living Color (1990–1992) with his brother Keenen. The show’s bold humor launched his fame, leading to a prolific film career with hits like Major Payne (1995) and The Last Boy Scout (1991), many of which he co-wrote or produced. Wayans later starred as Michael Kyle in the beloved sitcom My Wife and Kids (2001–2005), earning a 2002 People’s Choice Award, and portrayed Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon (2016–2019). In 2024, he teamed up with his son, Damon Wayans Jr., for the CBS sitcom Poppa’s House, blending his signature wit with a new generation. With a legacy spanning stand-up, TV, and film—plus four Emmy nominations for In Living Color—Wayans remains a towering figure in entertainment, known for his versatility and fearless comedy.
