In 1932, in the rural town of Kingdom County, Vermont, a devastating fire destroys the family’s hay, leaving them unable to feed all their cattle. Desperate, Quebec Bill—recently returned from Montana after years as a lumberjack and ranch hand—contemplates following in the illicit footsteps of his father and brother-in-law by running whiskey across the border into Canada. Joined reluctantly by his brother-in-law Henry, the eager Wild Bill, his uncertain mother Evangeline, and the hesitant farmhand Rat, the group navigates a dangerous world of smuggling, theft, and violence, storing their spoils with the help of unsuspecting monks. As Wild Bill struggles with the moral cost of their actions, he is haunted by the mysterious, fleeting appearances of Aunt Cordelia, a reminder of the family ties and secrets that bind them.
