In this process video I show how to freehand a painting without sketching first. It’s a best practice of mine to always start with form. That means doing a rough painting first of where some important shadows and shapes are for example: the placement of the guitar relative to the other parts of the painting, the size of this finger since it’s in front of his body, and the strap since it provides a line to the head.
I also am comfortable with making small mistakes at the beginning. I use a term “grenade distance” to describe getting close enough to the form and being able to correct and adjust as I go. Once you have proper form and lighting you can power forward pretty fast!
