James Johnston is one of the biggest names in Australian country music with runaway smashes including Raised Like That, One More and Country is For Me. Having recently released his second studio album Where You’ll Find Me, James continues to go from strength to strength ahead of his debut appearance in the UK this August as part of Country Calling, taking place from the 14th to the 16th of August in Chelmsford. Andrew from Culture Fix caught up with James to chat country music, find out more about his story and dig into the music.

James chats about his early experiences of falling in love with the world of country, including taking on a Garth Brooks classic at nursery, before digging into the impact of his appearances on The X Factor and Australian Idol, as well as working his way to success in the aftermath of these shows. James explores what the country scene in Australia is like, as well as detailing some of his best and worst live gig experiences.

That naturally leads to discussions of Nashville, what differs between the Australian and US country scenes and the experience of delving into the studio with a team of writers, which he admits can feel like a therapy session. The two-time Golden Guitar winner shares the experience of working on his hit sophomore album Where You’ll Find Me. In the world of streaming, James also explores finding success with tracks which weren’t originally singles and finding his music connecting with audiences in countries right around the globe.
