Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison

On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash gave, perhaps, his most memorable performance. Following the biblical admonition to remember and visit those in prison, the country music legend sang more than 15 songs for the inmates at Folsom Prison including “Greystone Chapel,” which had been written by an inmate.

Johnny Cash’s music abounds with references to the Bible. From songs like “Family Bible” to “The Man Comes Around,” Cash’s lyrics were infused with Scripture.

In the Forward to one of his books, Cash wrote,

"Please understand that I believe the Bible, the whole Bible, to be the infallible, indisputable Word of God. I have been careful to take no liberties with the timeless Word."
