Did you know that country music icon Johnny Cash, “The Man in Black”, served in the US military? In 1950, shortly after the start of the Korean War, John R. Cash enlisted in the Air Force at the age of 18.
He underwent basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio before being stationed in Landsberg, West Germany. Assigned to the USAF Security Service, he was a Morse Code intercept operator, decoding Soviet military communications. It was reported that he was the first American to hear the news of Joseph Stalin’s death via an intercepted message.
It was during his service that Cash, who was a self-taught guitarist, formed his first band, "The Landsberg Barbarians," igniting his passion for music. In 1954 he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant and returned to Texas.
His military experiences not only influenced his iconic songs but also instilled in him a lifelong reverence for the military, leading him to perform for troops worldwide throughout his career.
