The new country sound often incorporates elements of shoegaze, punk, rock, emo, and even rap. The new country sound also has its new royalty, the Crutchfield sisters, M.J. Lenderman, and Wednesday. Acts like Billie Strings, Tyler Childers, and Molly Tuttle exist on the more traditional side of the new country sound. I am not including any of these acts in My Favorite Fifty (spoiler alert), but I have discovered a multitude of dang good releases in this genre for 2025. Perhaps American indie music has migrated towards the new country sound as a natural gravitation due to this gawd-awful conservative trend dominating American politics and society. All I know for sure is that there are plenty of great new country releases in 2025 by American artists. I have already introduced Knifeproof Ear Muffs, Friendship, and Lorry. In this unboxing, I'll be unboxing two other new country releases to My Favorite Fifty. 1) Palmyra forged their foundation during the Covid epidemic and the band has continued to evolve into a dynamic, yet underappreciated (not even a Wiki page!), force in the new country scene. "Restless" is the debut album for a band that has previously released a few EPs. The album is passionate and raw, featuring marvelous harmonies and lush acoustic arrangements. If you are the type to include The Band and My Chemical Romance on the same playlist, this might become your favorite new band. 2) Here is another artist without a Wiki page, Garrett T. Capps. The self proclaimed “cosmic country gonzo honky tonk weirdo freak” quietly unveiled "Life Is Strange" in March of '25 and I have returned to the album time and time again. Compared to his previous six albums, "Life Is Strange" is a low-key, no-frills release. The album stands strong on the strength of its songs; no gimmicks are required. Garrett T. Capps has been releasing albums since 2016, often with his band NASA Country, but I just learned of him this year. What a treat! If you've scoured Wiki and exhausted all musical possibilities to refresh your stale collection, give these two albums a listen and see if you can tell me that the "new country royalty" sits securely on its thrones.
