Inside This House by Guy Clark. Among my favorite albums ever is Lyle Lovett’s “Step Inside This House” from late 1998. It is Lovett’s double CD homage to the Texas songwriters that influenced his work and art. Of course Lovett makes the compositions of the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Robert Earl Keen,Willis Alan Ramsey and so many others his own. As only Lovett can. None of the compositions is Lovett’s.

The gem, though, is the title track. It was the first song Guy Clark ever wrote way back in the mid-60s. It was thought that Clark never recorded it. Lovett heard Eric Taylor playing it and he fell in love with it and recorded it for the double CD, where I fell in love with it!

However, after Clark died in 2016 an original demo of Guy singing "Step Inside My House" was found on a cassette tape in Guy's basement workshop. So now you can hear Clark singing it on YouTube.
I saw Clark several times live and he never performed it when I was at the show.
