Marine Colonel John Glenn, a WWII and Korean War veteran, became the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962. Glenn was one of the military test pilots selected to comprise NASA's Mercury space program. He went on to serve Ohio in the U.S. Senate for 24 years.
