Niall Horan, a Mullingar native, was only 16 when he auditioned for the television show “The X Factor” in 2010. Little did he know, auditioning as a solo artist, that he would be cherry-picked for one of the biggest and most successful boy bands of all time. Following the break-up of “One Direction”, Horan dropped his debut solo single, "This Town," in September 2016. He followed with two more singles, "Slow Hands" and "Too Much to Ask," before finally delivering the chart-topping album Flicker in October 2017. Since then, he has solidified a successful solo career by releasing two more chart-topping albums, Heartbreak Weather (2020) and The Show (2023). He served as a winning coach on The Voice US for two consecutive seasons and launched a successful golf management company, Modest! Golf.

Blending Irish musical roots with influences from rock, country, and singer-songwriter traditions, he’s become an artist whose taste runs just as deep as his catalog. On this episode of the music game show, we quiz Niall on a few of the records that have soundtracked his life - from seeing Bruce Springsteen on Broadway, to the chokehold the boyband Westlife had his generation in Ireland in. He reflects on learning country music through Eagles and Shania Twain, why Noah Kahan reminds him of home, and how authenticity is what makes certain artists impossible to ignore.
We also get into the lasting power of Van Morrison, the intimacy of Cannonball, why Damien Rice still feels like a blueprint for acoustic songwriting, and we introduce him to a newer artist - Dove Ellis.
Enjoy the episode!
