Visual Art Exhibit Proposal: Includes 55 paintings by the African American Landscape art group known as the Florida Highwaymen. Plus 26 portraits of the Highwaymen Artists who were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004.
**The Florida Highwaymen: An Art Exhibit Proposal**
In the mid-1950s, a group of inspired young African Americans chose to pursue careers in art rather than endure the arduous work of picking crops in the sweltering heat of Florida's agricultural industry. This decision led to one of America's most fascinating art stories.
These determined young artists forged an incredible success story against numerous odds during the Jim Crow era and the period of post-segregation. Their journey was unconventional, unorthodox, and unwavering. Through innovation and determination, they overcame segregation and racism. By developing new speed painting techniques, utilizing inexpensive materials, and creating effective marketing strategies, this group of 26 mostly self-taught artists produced upwards of 250,000 landscape paintings over the next 70 years. Accomplishing what no other group had done, the Florida Highwaymen have been called "The Last Great American Art Movement of the 20th Century."
The exhibit is flexible in size and can be adjusted to fit the installation location. In total, there are 55 paintings, along with 26 portraits of the group's artists. A complete exhibit showcasing all of the paintings and portraits requires approximately 1500 Square Feet of Exhibition was space.
