Jim Webb wrote and recorded this in 1977, and then a couple of years later Glenn Campbell recorded his version. The song lay unforgotten then until Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson got together, as supergroup The Highwaymen, and recorded their version after which it became a country classic.
This my 25th song of this day by day run of covers and time to take a break and work on my own songs, but watch this space for more soon....
