This is a new English Country Dance, named for the romantic ballad, “The Highwayman,” by British poet, Alfred Noyes. The action in this ballad takes place during the 18th century—the main time period in which English Country Dances were popular.

“Then look for me by moonlight,”
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight,
though hell should bar the way” –From the Highwayman

The music was composed by Katie Grennan, a widely acclaimed and accomplished fiddler. Her many recordings include those with her own ensemble as well as with Gaelic Storm, Reverie Road, The Bow Tides and The Steam Quartet. Many thanks to Katie for allowing me to use her recording of “Mike’s Per Diem” as well as the notation for that tune.

Written instructions for the dance are included in the video.

The music notation for “Mike’s Per Diem” is also in the video. (The notation is posted with a landscape view to magnify the text.) There are two pages that feature two slightly different versions of the tune for added interest—just like in a live concert.

The above tune is part of a medley of three tunes on the album Second Story. It may be heard on this YouTube recording:
