This illustration depicts Alfred Noyes's famous narrative poem "The Highwayman." The romantic outlaw visits his lover, Bess, the landlord's daughter, at the inn. The story is a tragic love tale set in 18th-century rural England. A jealous ostler betrays the highwayman to Redcoat soldiers. The soldiers set a trap, tying Bess to her bed with a musket at her chest. When the highwayman returns, Bess shoots herself to warn him of the ambush.

The highwayman dies seeking revenge after learning of Bess's sacrifice. The poem concludes with the legend of their ghosts meeting on winter nights. It remains one of the most popular narrative poems in English literature.
