The Highwaymen were a "collegiate folk" group who all attended Wesleyan University in the late 50s early 60s. This is the first song they released. It is an African-American spiritual from The Civil War era. The slaves were free when their owners fled when the union navy was closing in. Charles Pickard Wane wrote the words they were singing. The song was first published in 1867. This version reached #1 on the charts and was the #3 song of 1961.
