Back in the early 1970s, I was working with Johnny Cash on several films and United Way asked us to make this one. I believe that the song "God's Children Are Friends Of Mine" was never performed anywhere but in this film. I found the 16mm original and made this copy. Great memories. A great person Johnny Cash was.
Johnny Cash supported the United Way campaigns because he believed in the organization's mission to provide a support system for those in need, particularly "the working man, the underdog, and the down and out"
Cash felt a deep connection to people facing hardship. He wrote many songs about those who have to "reach out for help"
He was particularly moved by the story of "Bobby," a child with developmental disabilities whose family found hope and specialized care through United Way-funded centers. Cash viewed these children as "God's children" who deserved a "brighter day"
He advocated for the "United Way" philosophy—the idea that by working together, the community can provide essential services like daycare, scouting, and emergency relief through the Red Cross or Salvation Army.
