When Johnny Cash met June Carter, he was at rock bottom. Exhausting tours, alcohol, and addiction were slowly destroying his life and career. But June saw in him not a broken musician, but a man she was willing to walk the entire path with. She became his support — helping him overcome addiction and stay afloat when he was close to the edge. Cash proposed to her several times, but she refused. She said yes only once — on stage, in front of 7,000 people. In May 2003, June died after heart surgery. Johnny held her hand until the end. Four months later, he followed her. After her death, he said from the stage:
“I feel June’s spirit coming down from heaven to give me strength.”
