In this video, we’ll explore SM City North EDSA, a colossal shopping destination in Quezon City, Philippines, known as the first SM Supermall in the country and a pioneer of the "one-stop" shopping concept. Opened on November 8, 1985, by SM Prime Holdings, this iconic mall was built on 40 acres of former marshland amidst a political crisis with interest rates soaring to 45 percent, showcasing the resilience of its founder, Henry Sy Sr., the "father of Philippine retail." Initially spanning just 23 square meters, it has grown through multiple expansions to a massive 498,000 square meters by 2025, making it the second-largest mall in the Philippines and one of the top 15 globally. As one of Manila tourist attractions, tourist in Philippines will love this.
Join me as we explore its sprawling complex, featuring the City Center, The Block, The Annex, Sky Garden, Interior Zone, Northlink, and North Towers, all interconnected by footbridges. You’ll see a vibrant mix of over 820 shops and restaurants, including SM Department Store, SM Supermarket, and international brands like Uniqlo, H&M, and Forever21, alongside local favorites like Jollibee and Max’s of Manila. The mall’s Sky Garden, opened in 2009, offers a serene elevated park with water features, while the SM Cinema boasts advanced IMAX with Laser and Director’s Club theaters with Dolby Atmos. From 2014 to 2016, SM North EDSA held the title of Southeast Asia’s largest solar-powered mall with 5,760 solar panels, a record later surpassed by Robinsons Starmills in Pampanga.
Historically, the site was part of the 1941 Frost Plan for Quezon City’s National Exposition Grounds and was once intended for teachers’ housing by the Government Service Insurance System. The mall also hosts a Catholic chapel for masses, reflecting the Philippines’ cultural roots, and features entertainment like an Olympic-sized ice skating rink and SM Bowling Center, which opened in 1989. Despite past incidents, including a 2013 robbery by the Martilyo Gang and a 2017 fire, SM North EDSA remains a beloved landmark, attracting up to 4.4 million visitors on weekends. Located at North Avenue corner EDSA in Barangay Santo Cristo and Bagong Pag-Asa, it’s open from 10 AM to 9 PM on weekdays and 10 AM to 10 PM on weekends.
