In memory of Tulsa's legendary guitarist Tommy Crook, here is "Crazy" (Willie Nelson's classic song) from a 2000 cd of his with Anthony Weller. Tommy has been dubbed the best guitar player in the world, as Chet Atkins told Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Tommy had been one of Tulsa's early players in the late 1950s when other locals like Russell Bridges, Johnny Cale, Jack Dunham, Chuck Blackwell, Carl Radle, Jimmy Karstein, Flash Terry, Clyde Stacy, Bob Taylor, Rocky Frisco, Gene Crose and many others were honing their skills playing together in various couplings and groups. He was in David Gates' group The Accents when David was in college and the band was hired to back Chuck Berry at Continental Skating Rink on June 20, 1961. Tommy was seventeen at the time. While David and many other Tulsans travelled west to seek fame, Tommy did not. Few recording exist by Tommy. There's a rare Derrick Records 1968 recording of Tommy and Paul McGhee titled In Concert. Tommy made a solo cassette in 1988 and recorded with Shelby Eicher in 1991. He performed four songs in the 1997 Masters Of Fingerstyle Guitar anthology and in August 2000 he and Anthony Weller recorded 110 Degrees in the Shade for Tulsa's Ton Tom Records label. Tommy was fifty-six at the time and Anthony was forty-two. Tommy is on the left channel with Anthony heard on the right.
Tommy was born February 16, 1944 and recently passed away on February 5, 2026. The photograph of Tommy wearing glasses and playing guitar sitting was taken in July 2000 by Jack Dunham, who was also a Tulsa legend as singer and songwriter.
