Waylon Jennings defined the gritty "Outlaw Country" movement. But long before his solo fame, he was the young bass player for Buddy Holly. During a freezing 1959 winter tour, Jennings gave up his seat on a chartered flight to J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), jokingly telling Holly he hoped the plane would crash. When the plane tragically went down, killing everyone on board in what became known as "The Day the Music Died," Jennings was left with crippling survivor's guilt. It took decades of battling severe addiction to finally forgive himself.
