"Why Me Lord" was Kristofferson's only major country hit as a solo recording artist, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in July 1973. But, as a songwriter, Kris was the toast of Nashville during the first half of the 70s turning out songs like "Me and Bobby McGee", "Sunday Morning Comin Down", "Help Me Make it Through the Night" and many other chart toppers for various stars of the era.
