I sang this song as part of my recent presentation on "The Songs of Shel Silverstein" at South Yarra Senior Centre in Fawkner Park.
The song was written for the 1970 film about the famous Australian bushranger, Ned Kelly. The film was directed by Tony Richardson, and starred Mick Jagger in the title role. It was a British production, but was filmed entirely in Australia, shot mostly around Braidwood in southern New South Wales. Shel Silverstein wrote the songs for the sound track, including this one, which was performed in the movie by Waylon Jennings.
Lyrics and chords:
A
“Mother, tell me, mother,
............. D .................... A
Where has my daddy gone?
................................................. E7
And why is my daddy always leaving?”
............ A
“Now, hush, my child, and go to sleep.
.......... D ....................... A
He's working with the cows and sheep.
................................................... E7 ... A
Daddy does his ranching in the evening.”
“Mother, tell me, mother,
Why he took his gun along.
For I know 'tis not the gaming season.”
“Now hush, my child, and go to sleep.
'Tis bigger game your Daddy seeks.
For Daddy does his hunting in the evening.”
“Mother, oh dear mother,
I see him coming now,
And seven bonnie thoroughbreds he's leading.”
“Now hush, my child, and go to sleep.
And of these things do never speak,
For Daddy makes his living in the evening.”
“Mother, tell me, mother,
Is that my daddy's voice,
Calling to you so early in the dawning.”
“Now hush, my child, and go to sleep.
'Tis not the time to bother me,
For Daddy does his loving in the morning.”
